Stop Fossil Advertising

Poster campaign for Extinction Rebellion

Date June 2024

For Extinction Rebellion I designed a poster campaign against ‘fossil advertising'. Advertising that directly or indirectly promotes the usage of fossil fuels. We've also stopped advertising for tobacco.

I came up with a campaign in two parts.
Firstly, three posters that have the fossil product removed from them.

Next to spreading these posters, XR also had the plan to remove actual fossil advertising from the streets. My job was to design a poster they could hang in that space.

I tried designing a very empty poster. More empty than white. The grey and white block pattern indicates, like in the other posters, that something is missing.

An example of that in Maastricht

In one weekend more than five hundred fossil ads (from KLM, Corendon, Shell, etc.) from twenty five municipalities have been removed, using the right allen key, and replaced with this 'emtpy' poster.

(XR says they'll keep doing these kind of actions to put pressure on the operators of these advertising columns, hoping they'll stop taking fossil clients. Click here for their own press release about it.)
